The United States is facing a behavioral health crisis, driven by persistent provider shortages combined with an explosive increase in demand and acuity. This perfect storm has resulted in the utilization of emergency department visits for mental health to skyrocket, particularly among our nation’s youth. Sadly, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reported a 20% increase in suicide rates among youth between ages 15-24 between 2020 and 2022.1 Furthermore, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States in 2021, the second leading cause of death for individuals between ages 10-14, and the third leading cause of death for ages 15-24.
